Checking In

So its frustrating that I have only lost 1 pound in the last month. And the shameful part is I am more mobile then I have been in the last 4 months. 23 pounds is nothing to shake a finger at but still I know I can do better. Mondays I normally have myself convinced I deserve that granda mocha and extra large donut. But today as I stood in line to order drooling over that cranberry scone I silently reminded myself that this is Gods temple and I am only as good as I treat muself. So I ordered a tall non-fat anda yogurt. I have 77pnds to go gosh that seems like a lot lol.

shakeology review

So today I tried the vanilla flavored shakeology and I will say this. It is light years tastier than the Cyto brand from Costco. It did have a slight chalk after taste, but compared to the Cyto after taste it really doesn't compare. I made a banana berry shake and it was really delightful. I have to say I had my shake around 8:00am and it held me over until around 11am, which is right in alignment with my next meal. (remember every three hours)

Oh and did I mention there is no foam, it came out smooth and silky like a real shake. I was shocked, and so excited. I wouldn't wait to order. I was also excited to check out the nutritional info, however after looking on their site shakeology I couldn't find much. Just key phrases like "More than 70 super-nutritious ingredients" but no mention of what those really are. You have to go to the FAQ's to get the nutritional facts, and really dig.

So here is where I was most let down.

Their shakes cost a GRIP!!! $129 for 30 servings. So what is that like $4 per serving. If you are like me drinking anywhere from 1-2 shakes per day I would be spending $258+ per month. Worth it? What are your thoughts? I will say my curiosity is peaked...what does the chocolate taste like...hmmm Oh and of course they don't do samples.

Why Diet's Don't Work

Ok friends, so I have given up on dieting. I made this decision some time ago. For me, it just wasn't working. I was always calorie counting, or weighing my food and in turn I would start eating those devil donuts again. It always ended the same. I am realizing now I just need to have a plan, understand what I am consuming (good vs. bad foods), be preplanned and have my fans. Now by no means am I planning on continuing the evil cycle I am on. I have started to find a balance that is working for me. When I follow it, I see results, when I don't I see no results. The last month I have not been doing to well, but I am in a reboot phase. I think I needed to stop looking at everything as a diet, or diet food, it is just a lifestyle and a way at looking at food in a different light.

Take a look at this interesting article about why diet's fail.

Tuesday Transformation Weight Loss Success Story

Check out these awesome before and after pics

Jason 40
Kingsburg, CA

Meet 40yr old Jason husband and daddy of two. He found a routine that worked for him and shed 35 lbs. Here is his story:

A seasonal worker, track coach, and full time daddy Jason decided it was time to make a serious change. Growing up athletic and involved in several different sports, Jason finally landed as a Division I collegiate Javelin thrower for Fresno State. He would eventually go on the meet his gorgeous wife and collegiate swimmer Patti. Patti has taken this journey with Jason and has been his #1 fan!

After a total of four knee surgeries including 2 ACL replacements and a little sympathy pregnancy weight gain he tipped the scales at 242 lbs. Jason knew something needed to give. With diabetes running in his family and a not so good check up with his doctor he knew the time was now.  So at the age of 39 he decided the time was now and went from 242 lbs to 207 lbs.

So how did he do it? Nutritionally he cut out the late night snacking and adding a lot more veggies, chicken and fish to his diet. He also cut out white rice for brown. Fitness was really the key for Jason. Last October he began running again.  Literally limping into it, he would run for three minutes and walk for one minute a total of 30 minutes. The next week I tried four minutes three days a week. Rain or shine, warm or cold he didn’t miss a scheduled workout. Within a month he could run three miles straight so he signed up for his first 5k on Thanksgiving morning. He was given a birthday gift of an entrance into a half marathon to take place on his 40th birthday in May and the fire was lit.  With his wife Patti training for a half iron triathlon, they started to feed off of each other’s success. Summertime is hard with Jason’s work schedule, but he is so dedicated to maintaining his healthy lifestyle that he will go out for a four mile run after working a twelve hour graveyard shift. He says in his own words “I would have never EVER considered that possible in the recent past.”

On his 40th birthday he completed his first half marathon with a goal of 2 hours, this beast completed it in 1:55:54. He is planning on competing in a triathlon in his near future and has a full marathon scheduled for February. With a recent visit to the doc he is no longer at risk for diabetes and his 8yr old has decided he wants to start running with his dad. He has also been able to train alongside his wife which he considers a ‘wonderful blessing’. He would tell someone starting this journey “nothing happens overnight. As long as you keep reminding yourself WHY, you can keep pushing forward.”

Thank you Jason for sharing this amazing and real weight loss journey!

So you think oatmeal is a healthy alternative?

Check out this great article on Oatmeal and how we end up sabotaging our diets with all the extra's we add to make it "taste good". I started to ponder this today as I added walnuts, cranberries, milk and of course a "touch" (at least a tablespoon or more) of brown sugar. Was I defeating the purpose?

Hydration Calculator

How much water are you drinking?

Check out this Hydration Calculator to see how much you should actually be drinking.

I am learning through my weight loss journey how important water is as part of my success. I will have to say getting up 5x a night is no bueno, but I know that just means I am flushing out the toxins I don't need.

Here are just a few fun facts:

  • Initial weight loss is largely due to loss of water, and you need to drink an adequate amount of water in order to avoid dehydration.
  • The process of burning calories requires an adequate supply of water in order to function efficiently; dehydration slows down the fat-burning process.
  • Burning calories creates toxins (think of the exhaust coming out of your car), and water plays a vital role in flushing them out of your body.
  • Dehydration causes a reduction in blood volume; a reduction in blood volume causes a reduction in the supply of oxygen to your muscles; and a reduction in the supply of oxygen to your muscles can make you feel tired.
  • Water helps maintain muscle tone by assisting muscles in their ability to contract, and it lubricates your joints. Proper hydration can help reduce muscle and joint soreness when exercising.
  • A healthy (weight loss) diet includes a good amount of fiber. But while fiber is normally helpful to your digestive system, without adequate fluids it can cause constipation instead of helping to eliminate it.
  • Drinking water with a meal may make you feel full sooner and therefore satisfied eating less. Note, however, that drinking water alone may not have this effect. In order to feel satiated (not hungry), our bodies need bulk, calories and nutrients.

Get drinking friends, and I don't mean alcohol... :-)

Seriously just My 2 Cents

Ok friends, so I have said several times I like things that taste good. I am new to the protein game so this is just my basic first pass as I try out new brands. I have been using Cyto Sport from Costco, it is about $30+ for a 6lb bag. I recently sent for a sample of the Vemma Bod-e Chris Powell protein shake for $38 for a lot less amount. I was so excited since I had read the reviews online regarding Vemma, how delicious it was etc. I added a banana like I normally do and after a few sips here is where my shake went!!!

That's right, down the drain!!!

I know Cyto is not the best product out there, but in regards to just taste it is pretty simple for me!

Who are the players in your weight loss journey?

I am starting to understanding the importance of surrounding myself with the right folks as I partake on this journey, or at least identifying who the players are. After reading Choose to Lose I can say I can clearly see who those players are in my life, can you?

  • The Teammate -will jump right in with you and change their lifestyle right along with you
  • The Fan - isn't ready to make any personal changes, however they will whole heartedly cheer you on
  • The Coach - understands what you are going through and will give you advice and tips along the way
  • The Pusher - offers you comfort food out of love and concerned and will be offended if you turn them down
  • The Competitor - Beware of this person, no seriously! Jealous and competitive and will try and one up you. May even start their own journey and won't invite you to join. They may also try and test your will
  • The Saboteur - Your weight loss journey is a inconvenience for them. They will bring restricted food into your place of business or home. And they may even try and distract you when it comes time for your exercise or meal time, and may nag you to lighten up

Seeing Positive Results w/Chris

I am someone who needs easy, not just easy but super easy. I may have found it with Chris Powell from the show Extreme Weight Loss.

I purchased his book on eBay and I must say, so far so good. With a torn achilles (so no exercise) I have lost 10 pounds over the last two weeks. Carb cycling seems to pretty easy if you are planned out. Alternating every other day with a high carb and low carb seems less restrictive then other cycles such as South Beach.

From someone who has gone from a cheat day every day to a cheat day on Saturdays I haven't done too bad.

Examples of a High Carb Meal:
(Carb) 1/2 Cup Brown Rice
(Protein) Grilled Talapia seasoned with Lemon Pepper
(Veggie)  Steamed Brocolli
(Flavor) 2 tbsp of Hummus for dipping

Examples of Low Carb Meal
Turkey Lettuce Wraps
(Protein) Lean Ground Turkey
(Veggie) Portobello Mushroom
(Veggie) Sauted onions and bell peppers
(Veggie) Large Leaf Lettuce
(Fat) Lowfat Mozerrella Cheese

Can you imagine eating like this 5x's a day?

Pick up his book at www.ebay.com

Starting my day off right!

I have exchanged eggs for egg whites and my taste buds didn't protest much at all!! I can eat this on my low or high carb days. (For more info on carb cycling inbox me or continue to watch the post as I reveal more and more info.) This delightful omelet covers my carb, protien, and a little fat the three items you should be using every morning based on Chris Powell's book.

Craig's Yummy Egg White Omlete

(Protein) Egg Whites - enough to cover bottom of the skillet, he says he doesn't measure :-)
(Protein) 2 slices of turkey bacon
(Fat) Sprinkle of reduced fat cheddar cheese
(Veggie) Chopped onion as desired
(Veggie) Mushrooms as desired
(Veggie) Spinich
(Carb) Strawberries

Directions:

Spray bottom of frying pan with Pam and saute veggies and turkey backon. Once to desired firmness pour in egg whites. Once cooked on the bottom, flip and sprinkle with cheese. Add to plate with strawberries. Super easy and quick! No need to add salt to this dish, the turkey bacon is salty enough. Add black pepper to give it a little pop.
